PRS Paul's Guitar Private Stock #5283 (2014)

Even after decades in the business Paul Reed Smith is constantly developing his guitars. He always incorporates his discoveries, a personal selection of woods and individual pickups into the so-called “Paul's Guitar”, which is based on the master's personal guitar. If you then get such a well thought-out and coherent package in the “Private Stock” version, you can be sure that you are holding a very special gem in your hands. And so it is here! The neck is made of Peruvian mahogany, the body of “African Ribbon” mahogany, the fingerboard of Madagascar rosewood with the “Brushstroke Bird” inlays characteristic of Paul's Guitar and the top of “Curly Maple”. As a highlight the guitar comes in an extremely rare “Electric Tiger Glow” finish and has the very comfortable Pattern neck profile. It corresponds exactly to Paul's specifications and the use of these exclusive woods not only results in incredible sustain, but also produces a balanced and fresh basic sound. As expected the playability is also first-class thanks to the superbly dressed frets. “Narrow 408” humbuckers, which can be split into singlecoils with two small toggle switches on this model, provide the transmission to the amp. The two pickups are incredibly smacky, juicy and yet tight and defined. This is exactly how a modern Les Paul sound should sound! When the pickups are split to provide more sound options, one side of the humbucker is switched off, but at the same time around 1500 turns are added to the remaining singlecoil to compensate for the difference in volume. In contrast to other guitars with a split feature this ensures that there is only a barely perceptible difference in level when switching between the two modes. ...and it is precisely because of such harmonious and practical details that the rare Paul's Guitar is known: extremely well thought out and optimized for the demands of the modern musician! The fact that it is also an absolute Les Paul killer in humbucker mode makes the great overall package all the more attractive. The first time you hear the guitar in “loud” mode you can't help but get excited: the humbuckers deliver a singing, full-bodied tone with just the right “nose” to give it a unique character. It's no wonder that Simon McBride, the amazing guitarist in the current Deep Purple line-up, swears by 408s. Another point worth mentioning about this Private Stock is the fact that the guitar was played a lot and with pleasure. Although the frets are still in top condition it is already swung in fantastically and of course there are some slight signs of use and wear (especially minor belt buckle scratches on the back).
