PRS Custom 22 10-Top Tobacco Sunburst (1995)

After PRS had great success from 1985 on with the Custom 24 they followed up in 1991 with the PRS Dragon, a special series limited to about 100 specimens, basically the first Custom equipped with 22 frets. However, the neck was not simply shortened by two frets. In addition to a larger headstock angle the position of the pickups was also changed by a few centimeters. Both changes are of course noticeable in the sound characteristic, which is somewhat warmer and bluesier compared to the Custom 24. But who expects only soft tones here, is absolutely wrong. The previous owner not only replaced the 5-way rotary switch with a 3-way toggle switch and changed the poti knobs for purely optical reasons, but also upgraded the pickups. On the neck he installed an Amber Classic Standard and on the bridge an Amber Custom Hot 60 (the original poti knobs and Dragon pickups are of course included). And the resulting sound really knocks your socks off: nice, fat and smacking at the bridge with great attack and enough bite and mids. At the neck Blues heaven! Nothing muddy here and the super sustain makes for wonderfully singing lead sounds. The look of this guitar is like its sound simply gorgeous! The attractive 10-top in Tobacco-Sunburst can charm just as the noble moon inlays of the rosewood fingerboard. The Wide-Fat neck fits very well in the hand, even with smaller hands, and in combination with the contoured body ensures first-class playability. But what I have to emphasize most is the excellent condition of this Custom 22. Although it is already 28 years old and accordingly fantastically swung-in the guitar including the frets is in top condition. All around a great player with a timeless look that delivers a killer sound at a bargain price.
