This exclusive Martin D-28M is part of the “Custom Artist Series”, belongs to a limited edition of just 100 specimens and was made in honor of the folk band “The Mamas and the Papas” in 2013. The instrument is based on the D-28 of guitarist John Phillips with a top made of soundmighty Carpathian spruce and a body made of Madagascar rosewood, which today is no longer available. The mahogany neck has an ebony fingerboard with mother-of-pearl dot inlays and the headstock features a mother-of-pearl inlay in the shape of the silhouette of the four band members as a special treat. Other features include “Forward Shifted Scalloped X-Bracing”, a faux tortoise pickguard, cream-colored ivoroid binding, beautiful abalone inlays on the rosette and the proven Grover tuners. The neck of the acoustic features the popular Low Profile, which makes it first-class and super comfortable to play. In terms of sound, both strummers and fingerpickers are dealing with the absolute top league here: the guitar sounds full, powerful and balanced - just as you would expect from a top-class dreadnought! From the deep, tight bass to the shimmering treble, all frequency ranges are perfectly balanced. Even if the mids don't push themselves to the fore the sound is not only rich and warm, but also assertive and crisp. On this D-28M all types from strumming to fingerpicking are simply perfect - right up to the highest registers. The guitar always responds with a powerful, open tone that radiates warmth, clarity and transparency. To round off the fabulous overall package an L.R.Baggs “Element” pickup was installed to make the guitar suitable for stage use at any time. Of course this great acoustic, which label was signed by Michelle Philipps, the only surviving band member, has been played with pleasure over the last 12 years and accordingly shows slight signs of use and wear. Furthermore, the well-known Martin problem of a loosened binding was revealed here, which was expertly repaired in several places by luthier Mathias Schindehütte and supplemented in one place. But apart from that we can offer the future owner this beautiful gem in top condition and would like to express our congratulations.
