Maple body, "High Sensitive Filter'Tron" pickups, Bigsby tremolo and a center block against the feedback susceptibility of hollow bodies, ... the Gretsch G6137TCB Panther offers a lot at an extremely fair price. However, the guitar cannot hide its noble origins: the black lacquered gloss body is framed by a beautiful white binding and a Panther is emblazoned on the white pickguard next to the Gretsch logo. This exquisite look is rounded off by chrome-colored poti caps, which again feature the Gretsch logo. The center block is made of spruce, which in addition to the increased feedback resistance also achieves a somewhat more homogeneous sound as a pleasant side effect. Compared to the assertive, pronounced mids and highs of the triple-layered maple body spruce offers silkier highs and balances out the guitar's distinctive attack a little. Nevertheless this Panther sounds like a Gretsch through and through: twang without end, snappy and percussive at the bridge, full-bodied and soft in the neck position. The pickups are a revelation, because the "High Sensitive" variations of the classic "Filter'Tron" humbuckers react incredibly dynamically and sensitively. They master both the typical clean sound, as well as a proper crunch. Thanks to the sophisticated electronics, consisting of two volume controls, a master volume and a master tone, as well as a 3-way toggle switch, an incredible number of different sounds can be teased out of the guitar. As the icing on the cake a Bigsby tremolo provides cool vibrato sounds and Grover "Sta-Tite" tuners keep the tuning solid even when the vibrato is used excessively. So it's not surprising that this all-purpose weapon with its medium neck profile is also fantastic to play. And this is exactly what the previous owner did often and with pleasure, which is why the one or other small trace of use can be seen in the finish (especially slight belt buckle scratches on the back). Otherwise this magnificent piece is in top condition including the frets.
