Gibson Theodore Archive Collection Limited Ebony (2022)

The 2022 Gibson Theodore is one of the most discussed Gibson guitars of the last years. With this unique model the Gibson Custom Shop launched its "Archive Collection", realizing designs from Gibson history that previously existed only in sketchbooks. The Theodore goes back to a sketch by former chief designer Ted McCarty, who was also responsible for the design of the Explorer, SG, Flying V and Firebird. In 1957 he conceived this revolutionary guitar as a simple, lightweight doublecut with a characteristic tulip shape and single-line headstock. It was not realized at the time, but the headstock idea was adopted for the Explorer in 1958. When the Gibson Custom Shop finally realized the Theodore in 2022 it kept 90% of the original sketch, but made some small changes, such as the placement of the toggle switch, to increase practicality. And as ambivalent as the design has been debated, in practice the Theodore is one of the most fun and best-sounding P90s guitars we've ever played. Weighing in at just 2840 grams its beefier, super-comfortable 50s neck makes for incredible sound behaviour making it a super resonant and direct sound wonder even when played dry. The pickups are some of the best P90s we've ever heard from Gibson. Crisp, direct, very fresh, wiry and yet with enough warmth for clean picking and warm Blues. A fantastic all-around guitar with clear Rock'n'Roll ambition! In addition there is of course the collector's factor due to its high rarity value. There are only 318 copies of the Theodore, 106 pieces in each of the three colors red, black and natural. With this unique instrument it is of course no wonder that the previous owner enjoyed playing it during the last year. In view of its Ebony finish it was unavoidable that the one or other minimal play mark was left behind. However, the guitar is in top condition including the frets.
