Eric Clapton's work on the 1966 John Mayall album “Blues Breakers” inspired a whole generation of budding Blues guitarists. The cover of the record featured Eric reading the Beano comic strip, so it became known as the “Beano” album. ...and the instrument he used, a recently acquired 1960 Gibson Les Paul with a Sunburst finish, became known as the “Beano” guitar. Later that year Eric began rehearsals for his new supergroup Cream in a church hall in North West London. During these rehearsals his beloved Les Paul was stolen before he had the chance to play it in public or in the studio with his new band. Based on Clapton's memory the Gibson Custom Shop began issuing a faithful replica of this guitar in a strictly limited edition in 2010. In the process 95 specimens of the Beano were produced in the version personally aged by Tom Murphy and 350 pieces in this much more affordable VOS version. We are therefore delighted to be able to offer you serial number 270 here. With its great neck, the profile of which is somewhere between a 59 and 60 neck (i.e. not quite as flat as the typical Slim Tapers), it is wonderful to whizz across the fingerboard. In terms of sound, you wonder whether it's the pickups, the guitar's great resonance behavior or both that make this Les Paul sound so fantastic. Very direct with a great response and a great tone, ...simply a fantastic “Clapton Woman Tone”! Here you can articulate very well with the notes and the Paula sings and speaks at its very best. If you turn down the volume pot, it still remains wonderfully open and never loses tone. This rare and iconic gem comes including the frets in top condition to its new owner, whom we would like to congratulate.
