Gibson Les Paul 58 Murphy Lab 70th Anniversary Heavy Aging (2022)

Authentic, more authentic, Murphy Lab! This '58 Les Paul exudes exactly the mojo of the real old Bursts, because like the majority of the originals from this year it comes with a magnificent plain top and immediately confirms our belief that a top doesn't need a great grain to be more than fascinating. This is not only due to the attractive Lemon Burst finish, but above all also to the super authentic Heavy Aging of the Murphy Lab. As was often the case with real, old Paulas the red portion of the sunburst has completely faded here. Countless tiny hairline cracks run across the lacquer surface, which enchants with a wonderfully matted vintage patina. This is what a well-played ’58 Les Paul should look like! In the hand, the first thing you notice is the ingenious neck profile. A little thicker than the average 59 profile, but by no means so thick that it wouldn't be extremely comfortable to play. It's nice to have something in your hand, but you can still whiz around the dark rosewood fingerboard for hours without feeling tired. Especially because this Paula with an ideal weight of 3990 grams strikes the optimal combination of the best playability and sufficient swinging mass. This is also reflected in the fact that the unamplified sound is just as massive as the neck: loud, direct and beautifully balanced. On the amp the Custombuckers, which can hardly be distinguished from real PAFS in terms of sound, deliver an absolute feast for the ears with just the right mix of crispness, pearly highs and voluminous warmth. Nicely smacking and rich, but also wonderfully transparent and with perfect string separation. ...and of course always with that extra bit of bite that the 58 Paulas are known for!
