Finding a really great Explorer is not that easy. After all, despite their classic status, these distinctive guitars are not built in nearly the same numbers as Les Pauls, SGs and the like. Here we have one of these rare birds, and in a special edition, too. The guitar comes from a limited run for the Dutch dealer Max Guitars and comes in the full mahogany version. Visually, the dark walnut colour and the gold hardware stand out, which look simply fantastic with the superbly done heavy aging. When you pick it up, you are surprised by the featherweight of only 3540 grams - and the strong '59 neck. You wouldn't expect such a neck profile on an Explorer, but on the first notes you immediately notice the advantage of more mass: the guitar just sounds! Super resonant, open and with a lot of sustain the chords and single notes pearl towards you. Both dry and amplified by the Custombuckers. The playing comfort is great, once you get used to the chunkier neck profile. Whether slow blues or energetic riff rock - the guitar cuts a fine figure in all styles.
