On the one hand it is truly astonishing what phenomenal guitars the masterbuilders of the Fender Custom Shop keep bringing to market, but on the other hand sadness spreads when you realize what legendary masters are no longer available. In addition to John Cruz, Carlos Lopez and Vincent van Trigt, Ron Thorn has unfortunately also left the Custom Shop. This '69 Stratocaster shows just how great this loss really is! As soon as you open the case you immediately fall in love. The warm color of the extremely reliced “Vintage White” finish is simply fascinating, as is the dark, greasy wood grain in the areas without lacquer. Countless hairline cracks, peppered with all kinds of large and small imperfections, as well as the characteristically large and superbly aged headstock round off the super rocked look. And what the awesome appearance promises also applies to the sound: the three comparatively hotter wound “Handwound Poblanos” come across wonderfully pearly, bell-like, full and round. Whether clean or distorted, this Strat is convincing across the board. Balanced with a slight compression as known from old Strats, so that everything from juicy Blues on the neck to silky chords in the intermediate positions to roasting Rock on the bridge is possible in top form. Bell-like, fat with a super-differentiated bass foundation, voluminous mids and shimmering highs. And the playing characteristics also leave nothing to be desired: the fat but extremely comfortable “52 Style U” neck profile together with the 9.5'' fingerboard radius and the speedy 6100 frets offers the highest and most modern playing comfort. All in all, this is a Strat of the absolute top league, where sound, playability and look are completely convincing. ...and all this including the frets in top condition. So if you want to secure an absolute tone monster from the hands of masterbuilder legend Ron Thorn, you shouldn't think twice.
